DL III - Davis Love III

F.A.Q.

Q:

Can you summarize Davis' career to date?

A:

Davis Love III is one of the most successful and accomplished golfers of the modern era. He's fourth all-time on the career money list, with well over 30 million dollars in tournament winnings.

He's won 19 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1997 PGA Championship, his one Major victory, at legendary Winged Foot. He's also a two-time victor at The Player's Championship, widely acknowledged as the tournament with the deepest, toughest field of the year. His encore victory in 2003 was assured with a final round 64 during extremely tough conditions, and is considered one of the finest final rounds in PGA Tour history.

He also has more cups than Dixie. Davis has appeared in the Walker Cup, Dunhill Cup, the World Cup five times, the President's Cup six times, and will likely make his seventh appearance in the Ryder Cup in the fall of 2006. His next Cup appearance, whether it's in the Ryder Cup in 2006 or the president's Cup in 2007, will be his 20th appearance in an international team competition.

Q:

Where did Davis go to college?

A:

Davis attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he became an All-American golfer. He was elected to the University's Order of Merit in 1997.

Q:

Who does Davis credit with the development of his golf game?

A:

Davis credits noted instructors like Jack Lumpkin and Butch Harmon for advancing his game. He also acknowledges help from Jim Flick, Bob Toski and Peter Kostis, among others. But above all others it is Davis Love Jr., his late father, whom Davis acknowledges as his greatest instructor and role model. He was only 53 when he perished in a private plane accident in 1988. Davis Love III was only 24, and had won for the first time on the PGA Tour the season prior. But the lessons his dad taught him about golf and life have stayed with him, though he's been gone for nearly 20 years.

Q:

Who are Davis' most important and long-standing endorsement partners?

A:

Davis Love III is affiliated with Titleist, Foot Joy, Polo and the Sea Island Company, among several others.

Q:

Where does Davis live?

A:

Davis lives with his family on St. Simon's Island, Georgia, which is a coastal island located approximately one hour south of Savannah, Ga.

Q:

How large is his family?

A:

He and his wife Robin have two children. Their daughter Alexia (Lexie) was born in 1988, and their son Davis Love IV, known as Dru (short for Quadruple) was born in 1993. His mother Penta and brother Mark also live on St. Simon's Island as well.

Q:

Are his children golfers also?

A:

Daughter Alexia (called Lexie) has a true love for horses, not courses. Not surprising, considering they have a seven-stall barn on their property. She's a nationally ranked competitive rider in the adult division on Paso Fino horses. Lexie did compete on her high school golf team her senior year of high school. Dru, on the other hand, looks to take after both dad and the grand-dad he never knew. He's starting to make some noise in the junior division of the Georgia State Golf Association, and even paired with dad at the nationally televised Father-Son Challenge in 2005, playing alongside much older sons-of-famous-fathers named Nicklaus, Trevino, Player, Floyd and Irwin.

Q:

What are Davis Love's main interests away from golf?

A:

He has many hobbies and interests, most related to the great outdoors. Davis enjoys hunting, fishing, boating, horses, camping, motorcycle riding, and snowboarding.

Q:

Though he can likely play wherever he wants, what courses or clubs does Davis actually belong to?

A:

Davis maintains club memberships at several courses near his home in coastal Georgia. He's a member (and the official touring professional) of the Sea Island Golf Club, which is a 54-hole complex including a design of his own, called the Retreat Course. He's also a member of Ocean Forest Golf Club, a Rees Jones design on Sea Island, and the newly opened Frederica Golf Club, a Tom Fazio design from 2005, close by his St. Simon's Island home. He's also a member of Hampton Island, about halfway between his Golden Isles home and Savannah, where he is the designer-of-record at the Ricefields Course, scheduled to open in 2007.

Q:

Speaking of courses, where can other courses designed by Davis Love III be found?

A:

Davis and Mark Love's course design business, called Love Golf Design, continues to flourish. Their current stable of courses include: Ocean Creek on Fripp Island, South Carolina and Eagle's Pointe, near Hilton Head Island, in Bluffton South Carolina. The Preserve at Jordan Lake is near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Anderson Creek is not far from Fayetteville, North Carolina. Shell Landing is near Biloxi, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Kinderlou Forest is in Valdosta, Georgia, Windermere just north of Atlanta in Cumming, Georgia, and the aforementioned Retreat Course is part of the Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simon's Island, Georgia.
